Daily Snapshot – 24 July 2025

July 24th, I’ve just discovered, is this year’s Earth Overshoot Day, and basically the date where humanity’s demand for natural resources exceeds what Earth can actually regenerate during the year. Slightly alarming, especially considering that we are only just past the halfway mark of 2025 (yes, this year is flying by!)

Yes, earnings are front and centre, but today was a timely reminder just how sensitive the macro landscape is to any sort of positive developments on trade, and news of a Japan / US deal overnight offered a jump scare for shorts, as Autos jumped over +4% at the high to the best sector on the day and helped the Stoxx 600 add +1% and now up on the week. A reminder that the headline risk from tariffs is well and truly alive, and the most important thing about Europe’s move higher today is that it…

Well that was a bit of a strange day, no shortage of earnings news flow to digest, but it also felt like not much actually happened. Saying that, it does feel like this won’t be the case for too long, as the next two sessions are particularly important for us here in Europe… tonight we get earnings from SAP, a key momentum long name, alongside the first set of EU defence earnings from Dassault Aviation, followed by Thales tomorrow morning which is joined by Unicredit, the first major EU bank to…

Dramatic scenes in Dublin yesterday as heavy favourites Cork (2/5 to win) were stunned by Tipperary (11/4 to win), with the latter storming back after half-time to snatch the All-Ireland hurling title in style. As expected, the internet delivered with some cracking memes – one being an AI generated image of Cork players enjoying some pints of Guinness in the dressing room at half time and another photoshopping the county jerseys over the now infamous footage from a certain Coldplay concert alon…

So, we’ve had around 56 of the Stoxx 600 report this week so far, less than 10% of the index so it’s still far too early to draw firm conclusions (still a very long way to go!). That said, it’s been a fairly balanced mix of beats and misses so far and encouragingly, today’s session was much more positive than yesterdays, as Industrials stole the show with impressive moves to the upside for ABB, Diploma, and Legrand.

“WACO” was a term I saw on socials earlier after the following article from the FT pointed out that America’s trading partners have largely failed to retaliate against Trump’s trade war so far, which has allowed a president who’s been taunted for “always chickening out” to rake in nearly $50bn in extra customs revenues at little cost, and despite the chaotic headache which the whole ordeal has caused, there’s no doubt this will be a figure he will be proud of!

Interesting snippet from the Times here, which states that UK insurance brokers have seen a near tripling in life insurance enquiries and driven by individuals looking to get ahead of Chancellor Reeve’s upcoming inheritance tax reforms which take effect next April. 2024 saw more billionaires created to inheritance rather than entrepreneurship, so its fair to say this is definitely a topical subject at the minute and what caught my attention was the stark disparity in rates across Europe, with S…

Some hilarious scenes at the Club World Cup final in the MetLife stadium last night, where winners Chelsea were forced to lift the trophy alongside President Trump, who refused to follow UEFA boss Infantino off-camera and instead joined in the glory – much to the players’ clear confusion. To be fair, this probably shouldn’t have been a huge surprise but still made me laugh all the same and adding to the irony was the fact that this happened just after he threatened a 30% tariff on the EU and Me…
